@yakkoTDI Kind of what I was thinking too…and tiredness comes from hard work & a fair piece of exercise too. Yesterday, I had 10.5 hours at the office & still managed to get a 5 mile walk in after supper. When my head hit the pillow, it was “lights out”!!
30 years ago, it was a pizza and a side of bbq wings. Now it’s a voodoo prayer of hope for a peaceful dream counting Tums tablets jumping over fences to ward off the heartburn.
Back when we were young, a midnight stomach grumbling was soothed by a trip to the fridge for some cold fried chicken
Now that we’re old, that midnight stomach grumbling was caused by a trip to the fridge for some cold fried chicken
I do get positive ASMR response from some things, but it’s generally not those that are labeled/advertised as “ASMR”, which feel like over-amplified whispering, grating on me as much as listening to eating noises … which is another thing they frequently include …
But with all that said, I fully appreciate that they work fine for other people.
And I have my own small list of unintentionally-ASMR recordings that I pull out occasionally.
In case someone was curious, I figured I might as well share some example of ASMR-like videos that aren’t trying to be. My most recent [re]discovery is the channel “Tibees” — she mostly covers math- and science-adjacent topics, but don’t let that scare you off. They’re very approachable (though, having a math degree myself, I’m probably not qualified to declare what is “approachable”).
@Zeusandhera I can’t tell if you’re saying that you’re a fan of white noise, or if you just use a fan to generate white noise — but I love how it’s probably both!
Air Purifier, Ceiling Fan, basically white noise. If you can’t fall asleep, Google “Relaxing your Tongue”. I know sounds weird. Look into it… Has been working for me since I read a newspaper article back in the 80’s. And to tell you truth, I am grateful you can find it online. Much easier than trying to explain it, and it lends some credibility to it. In other words, people don’t look at me like I’m NUTZ!!!
@yakkoTDI It could be, and that has been my theory- but coffee does work better than tea for me for some reason. I’m one of those people for whom caffeine has no impact, so I know it’s not the caffeine.
@brainmist@OnionSoup
I can drink coffee up through bedtime, tho I risk falling asleep with a cup in my hand and burning myself. My problem is that I have to get up two hours later to go pee…
I have nature sounds playing and fall asleep to a podcast. The nature sounds usually play all night. The podcast just goes for 1 episode. Unless I can’t sleep, then I start a second episode.
I literally do everything. And I do get a good night’s sleep. But let’s see, Melatonin, eye covering, earplug in one ear, earbud in the other, listen to some guy telling me to relax my whole body then white noise. At night there’s only red lights in our house so that I don’t wake my brain up. Oh yeah and I also take Ambien. For years sleep eluded me. It no longer does. And I have to do all of these things.
@meeberly sorry about losing the doggos. Yes a snoring cat or dog can be very therapeutic and comforting.until 5-6AM when it’s like why are you not up yet? Then you get up, take care of what they want, get your day started, and they are like “back to bed!”
The sound of a thunderstorm is my go to. I have Ménière’s disease so quiet is never quiet; a silent room is like a rock concert. I spend my days with cicadas singing in my head! My actual hearing is great. The trouble is in my brain not my ears. So nature sounds sooth me to rest most of the time. Bring on the thunder!
I usually don’t have a problem going to sleep - sometimes I listen to a recording of “brown noise” - it sounds like the surf.
Now going back to sleep after I wake at 2 or 3 AM, that’s another story …
@macromeh that’s my normal wake-up time, too (not intentional). I tend to watch overnight news or from Europe (it’s already day there). They say that’s not a good idea. Then about 5 AM I might try a shot of sleep again and if I am lucky get 1 or even 2 REM cycles (1-2.5 hrs).
But next 2 weeks I can’t because Tour de France is on. also golf. So, weird sleep habits, not advisable…
Little white noise, mixed with brown and blue with a slight water and wind. I’m a DJ for sleeping… good app, its called “White Noise Generator” for Android.
Night train sounds. Reminds me of being on an overnight Amtrak or Trenitalia train… unless my sleeper car is just behind the locomotive that sounds its horn at every little road crossing all night long. (I’m looking at you, Amtrak Lake Shore Limited!) I especially like this video:
Tiredness.
@yakkoTDI Looks like tiredness has taken over Meh. Either that or @mediocrebot has gotten really drunk tonight.
@mediocrebot @yakkoTDI It was just too mesmerized by the bliss lights to realize the time.
KuoH
@kuoh @mediocrebot So mehsmerized that there is not a deal topic created yet.

KuoH
@kuoh ah the “old” joke
@pakopako Unfortunately, I now also better understand why the older generations prefer to have their suppers by 5 and are off to bed by 9.
KuoH
@kuoh @pakopako I’m an older gen and I really wish I could be off to bed by 9.
When I have trouble sleeping, I listen to ASMR sleep videos on my iPad. Very soothing.
@chuckf1 Every ASMR video I have seen just sounds like someone whispering very, very loudly.
@chuckf1 @yakkoTDI My experience, too.
I do get positive ASMR response from some things, but it’s generally not those that are labeled/advertised as “ASMR”, which feel like over-amplified whispering, grating on me as much as listening to eating noises … which is another thing they frequently include …

And because enough people told her that her voice is soothing and she should make ASMR videos, she did one! (“ASMR Solving math exam questions with an overhead projector”, 33 minutes)
On top of all that, she even has a playlist named “The Joy of Mathematics” (explaining math topics in a Bob Ross style.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
@xobzoo @yakkoTDI Listening to anything about mathematics would put me to sleep. I know it did when I was in school.
Good drugs
A fan for white noise!
@Zeusandhera I can’t tell if you’re saying that you’re a fan of white noise, or if you just use a fan to generate white noise — but I love how it’s probably both!
Sleep With Me Podcast! Scooter telling me bedtime stories!
A fan for white noise!
@Zeusandhera repetition will also tire you out!
Weed. Bourbon. Fatigue.

@llangley in that order?
@pakopako Usually! Although sometimes it seems like fatigue is constant so there’s that…
Red lights and relaxing music
Nothing helps me fall asleep.
bourbon and podcasts
40oz of Olde English 800
The tearful wails of my vanquished enemies.
@ShotgunX Well, of course!
Closing my eyes usually helps me fall asleep, eventually. Even when I’m at work.
Just a lil bit of weed…
audio books
Window A/C.

@Mandamm I’m intrigued by this term & will be looking it up!
A fan and the sound of the cpap
I don’t usually have trouble, but if I do I play simple word games in my head, which keeps me from ruminating on real life stuff.
CALM stories
Sounds opposite of what you might think, but a warm cup of coffee in the evening puts me right to sleep.
@OnionSoup It is probably the heat more than the coffee. I get the same effect from hot coffee, hot tea or even soup.
@yakkoTDI It could be, and that has been my theory- but coffee does work better than tea for me for some reason. I’m one of those people for whom caffeine has no impact, so I know it’s not the caffeine.
@OnionSoup Um, have you been assessed for adhd?
@brainmist @OnionSoup
I can drink coffee up through bedtime, tho I risk falling asleep with a cup in my hand and burning myself. My problem is that I have to get up two hours later to go pee…
@brainmist @OnionSoup
@chienfou–You probably fall asleep fast because you’re so hyperkinetic all day long!
Close your eyes.
Now focus all your attention on trying to see the inside of your eyelids.
Sound weird? Yep
Does it work? Also Yep
@ebatch I concentrate on trying to get a grip on my pancreas, but it’s a slippery little bugger.

Wife snoring, letting me know she is resting comfortably. Otherwise, she is up with pain.
@hchavers Oof. That hits hard.
May your wife have many snoring nights.
Temperature below 70f
@tricityladytn yes, snuggle under the down cover. Oddly, a quality thin down cover (not “down-alternative”) works well in warm weather too.
Getting physically exhausted during the day
Exhaustion. And familiar horror movies.
A fully active day. If not that, usually vodka.
Podcasts
Talking to myself.

My two sweet doggos helped me sleep at night and since they’ve been gone
, a temporary replacement stuffie does the trick!
@meeberly sorry about losing the doggos. Yes a snoring cat or dog can be very therapeutic and comforting.until 5-6AM when it’s like why are you not up yet? Then you get up, take care of what they want, get your day started, and they are like “back to bed!”
@meeberly I lost my snuggle puppy last year, and it has been hard. Happiness is a warm puppy.

Talk radio.
Well now I want to start a Meh ASMR channel.
@brainmist Just don’t do chewing sounds. (I can’t fathom how anyone could find that relaxing!)
/giphy chewing cud

Can’t believe no one mentioned sex!
(Tho basically if I get still and/or horizontal I’m generally asleep within two or three minutes anyway …)
@chienfou So pllenty of time for sex before sleeping.
@chienfou @yakkoTDI Whoever finishes first wins!
